Storm Pattern Navajo Rug by Louise Harvey

This Storm Pattern rug, handwoven by Louise Harvey of Chinle, Arizona, is made from all-natural wool, hand carded and hand spun. The design is deeply rooted in Navajo culture. At its center is the Lake of Emergence, from which humans and all living things are said to have entered this world.

The four corners of the rug represent the sacred mountains of the Navajo: Sis Naajini (Sierra Blanca) in the east, Tsoodzil (Mt. Taylor) in the south, the Dook' o'oosliid (San Francisco Peaks) in the west, and Dib' Nitsaa {Mt. Hesperus) in the north. Zigzag lightning bolts connect the mountains to the center, carrying blessings back and forth. Additional motifs such as the water bug, snowflake, and sacred arrows often appear, symbols of life-giving forces.

Storm Pattern rugs are highly recognizable, yet each one is unique. Louise’s weaving demonstrates both technical mastery and cultural storytelling, blending natural materials with deep meaning.
